I watched this TED talk this evening with Emily. If you can, take a moment to listen to Ann Cooper discuss school lunches. She brings up a lot of interesting points about what our children are eating and the consequences that will follow as well as a few possible solutions. Some of her statistics are difficult for me to accept (e.g. 5lbs of chemicals consumed per person per year) but her point is clear: kids need to know that chicken isn’t shaped like a giraffe.
A few points that stood out to me:
- her school has a gardening class and a cooking class(room)
- use of regional foods
- a quote on one of her visuals – “A country is only as healthy as its children and a prosperous as its farmers.” (or something like that)
- a generation of children not out-living their parents!?!?!
Questions I’m left with:
- What now? Can I contact my kids’ school district and actually make a difference?
- How (much) can I apply this information at home?
